Ganapathi Kolam
(Pisachu Kolam)
Ganapathi Kolam, also known as Pisachu Kolam, is one of the earliest kolams performed in Padeni. It is considered the first kolam to appear in the sequence. The kolam is prepared using natural materials and worn as a face covering. The performer carries ritual items and follows specific steps and movements.
Although the appearance may seem fierce or humorous, Ganapathi Kolam represents a divine force that removes obstacles and protects devotees. The kolam is believed to appease negative energies and bring balance. Ritual songs and rhythmic drumming accompany the movements, invoking Ganapathi’s blessings.
Symbolism of Pisachu Kolams
There are several types of Pisachu Kolams, each with slight variations in form and movement. Though they appear fierce, their purpose is benevolent. The belief is that by invoking these forms, harmful spirits are controlled and transformed into protective forces.
The songs, steps, and gestures performed during this kolam are strictly ritualistic. The kolam represents divine energy rather than fear, and it is performed to ensure prosperity, health, and peace for the community.
